CFSD Withholds Student Info from Parents

“When a student requests a preferred pronoun and/or name, and asks that it not be revealed to a parent, we inform the student that we cannot keep that request confidential, if a parent inquires. We also encourage the student to discuss their preference with their parent(s).”

CFSD Superintendent Dr. Mary Kamerzell

CFSD Has Received Negative Attention

Greatness comes from a culture of cooperation between students, parents, and schools. CFSD excellence is indebted to the strong families in the district and those who care enough to bring their kids here from outside the district. New policies threaten this cooperation and break long-established trust. CFSD has received negative attention in national and local media for its current practice of hiding information from parents. Click the links below for the full stories. CFSD actively encourages students to hide information from parents as evidenced by email conversations and anti-parent resources posted on district webpages. When a CFHS math teacher asked Principal Brase for guidance on the pronoun issue, she sent her the non-discrimination policy adding this: “We do not have a specific policy for pronouns.” She knows the non-discrimination policy doesn’t guide action on this topic.

“Our staff encourages students to discuss these matters with their parents.”

What’s the evidence of this? CFSD redacted email records show dozens of responses from CFSD staff to individual students requesting non-conforming pronouns. At no time, did any of those responses encourage parental involvement. CFSD practices discourage parental involvement. No parent kept from this information would know to inquire in the first place. The CFSD practice of keeping a confidential list was so bad that it made national headlines. Despite this negative publicity, the same practice continues today. Fox News: Arizona principal’s controversial email about pronouns outlines what ‘can and can’t be shared to families’ CFSD Strongly Supports the Principal Behind this List:

How did CFSD leadership respond to this principal’s secret pronoun list hidden from parents…?

“Thank you for writing in support of Mr. Rubin-Toles. I cannot agree with you more that our schools need to be a safe space for all students and appreciate the time you took to write.”

“Thank you for your thoughtful email and support of Mr. Rubin-Toles, which I share.”

CFHS Website Leads Students To Resources

CFHS website leads students to the resources which provides an escape button to hide their content from parents. Trevor Project and GLSEN are two such websites they offer. Other CFSD-recommended resources like ASCA and the NEA also openly promote hiding this topic from parents.

“Where are you at in terms of comfort with family knowing?” This was a question asked of attendees at one of the LGBT club meetings. The assumption is that they perceive themselves at odds with parents over the content discussed there.
